Calgary's $5-million 'Big Shopping Festival' of 1913: From the archives
"Come to Calgary prepared to shop. Be ready also to have a good time while here." This was one of the many headlines in the Calgary Daily Herald of Nov. 8, 1913, as the newspaper published a variety of articles about a special event — the Big Herald Shopping Festival. Visiting the Husdon's Bay "magnificent $1,000,000 department store" would be a highlight of a visit to the festival, the Herald reported, as would the deals promised at almost every store in town. Men's suits could be purchased for $20, a sewing machine for $19.50, a brass bed for anywhere from $15.75 to $100, and — for elite shoppers — $150 Paris gowns were on sale for $75 at Hudson's Bay. A few simple steps can get teenagers interested in financial literacy
Q: I didn’t grow up in a family where we talked much about anything. If we had questions, we kids had to figure things out pretty much for ourselves. Thankfully our grandparents were around and we could ask them. In many ways, my grandpa is more like my dad. It’s from him that I learned about saving up for what I wanted. While his advice was kind of old school, it helped me get to where I am today. Now I’ve got two teenagers and a recent high school grad at home who have all started working part time around their class schedules. I’d like to share the old school advice that worked for me, because it can work for them as well, but how do I explain things in a way that they’ll listen? ~Edwin Read More
