Chorney-Booth: Persian Plate adds some flavour to the city’s far northwest
If you're driving around the far-reaches of our suburbs these days, you’ll start to see something surprising: an influx of great, independently owned restaurants. Historically, many a Calgarian has complained about neighbourhoods being overrun by lacklustre chains while they yearn for good contemporary restaurants, a wide range of interesting global cuisines, and friendly mom ’n’ pop shops. Now the problem isn’t so much a lack of suburban restaurants, but with so many signs popping up in newer communities, it’s hard to know which are worth investigating. Read More

Thursday's letters: Single-use item bylaw counterproductive
The City of Edmonton is inviting comments on the single-use policies. It has been clear in my mind for some time that the original promotion of plastic bags by Sweden decades ago was based on the use of energy. They argued that it took more energy to produce paper bags than plastic bags. If you Google “How much CO2 is emitted in the production of a paper bag," you will find interesting results. Each plastic bag produced creates 0.04 kilograms of greenhouse gas (CO2). Each paper bag produced creates 0.33 kg of greenhouse gas or approximately eight times more. Yet, I see few people reusing paper bags. Read More
