Hurricane Helene strengthened into a Category 4 storm hours ahead of its expected landfall on Florida's northwest coast Thursday night as forecasters warned that the enormous system could create a "nightmare" storm surge and bring dangerous winds and rain across much of the southeastern U.S.

As representatives of the world's governments met at the UN General Assembly in New York earlier this week, tensions were growing in the world body over what many countries describe as double standards in the application of the UN Charter, which prohibits the seizure of territory by force.

The federal government is considering changes to the way it lets Canadians know about attempts at foreign interference in elections, including lowering the threshold for alerting the public that an attempt has been made.
